District Anti-Racism Transformation Team

DARTT

DARTT Members Attend Post GA Meeting

Susan Leslie, of the UUA, invited members of district and congregational Transformation Teams to a day-long meeting in Quebec City on June 25. Audrey Vincent, Chester McCall, and Myrtle Hepler attended. Margaret Link, former co-chair of the Jubilee Working Group, who lives in Raleigh, N.C., attended, also.

Instead of doing what Susan, Jacquie James, and Robette Dias had planned for us, we spent the first hour discussing an incident that happened on stage during a plenary session at GA and the following repercussions. For an account of those events, see "Diversity and Accountability" on pp.38-39 of the UUWORLD, September/October 2002.

We discussed the new structure of the UUA and its impact on anti-racism work in the denomination. The Jubilee Working Group and the Faith in Action Department no longer exist. Jubilee World Workshops are in the Congregational Services Department. Tracey Robinson-Harrison explained that fewer Jubilee World II workshops would be offered, and that Jubilee Ones, which many TJD folk have participated in, would also be reduced in number. The Journey Toward Wholeness Committee is a part of the President's Office, now. The plan is that anti-racism will become a part of every department's programs.

Each Transformation Team was asked to suggest measurable and achievable goals for the next two years. TJDARTT members offered the following proposals. Offer workshops to the following groups: Southeast Summer UU Institute (SUUSI), to new ministers (perhaps at SEUUMA), and new Board members; Step Ahead and National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), as well as current DARTT programs to congregations; add another minister to the Team (Chester McCall has moved to California); and create some formal connection with the TJD RE office. DARTT will discuss those proposals at its Retreat in Charlotte, October 5.

Audrey Vincent helped facilitate a great GA workshop on White Privilege. It took place in a big room which was packed. Many congregations across the UUA are using a variety of methods to address racism and white privilege.

Andrea Kelso and Elandria Williams attended an Advanced Trainers Conference in Chicago, offered by Crossroads Ministries, the group who trained DARTT.
