Your Wilde(e) Trustees Report
by Ed Wilde, UUA Trustee
The Unitarian Universalist Association Board of Trustees held its regular summer, 2002, meeting in Quebec City in conjunction with the General Assembly. Summer meetings differ from other Board meetings in that the working groups do not meet, and most items considered involved items that were presented at GA. The only action taken on reports presented was to receive them. A detailed report about the Board of Trustees meeting may be found at the website
http://www.uua.org/TRUS/notes0602.html. Items of particular interest in the meeting follow:
President Sinkford's Report
The President reported an increase in the visibility of the UUA. Following his election interest was focused on a white denomination with a black leader, but since then interest has broadened and coverage of our stand on a number of issues has increased. President Sinkford commented on the progress of the administrative reorganization, and how he hopes it will strengthen the UUA's racial justice efforts. He spoke about the separation of the Canadian Unitarian Council and the UUA, which was approved at the GA. Finally, President Sinkford spoke about his goals for the growth of the UUA. He has in mind a 5% growth rate per year rather than the 1% rate we have averaged in recent years. The Board received a report from the Task Force on New Congregation Formation which contained specific proposals on how such a rate may be obtained.
Youth and Young Adult Sunday
The Board received a report entitled Mind the Gap! It included details on the youth and young adult Sunday fund raising efforts planned for this fall. I request that you and your congregations actively support this program. It is part of our capital campaign, which has a goal of two million dollars for support of youth and young adult programming.
Liberal Religious Educator's Association
The Board received a LREDA/UUA Joint Task Force on Professional Standards. The aim of this task force is to clarify and strengthen our credentialing programs for lay professionals.
Anti-racism and Anti-oppression Actions
The Board adopted two motions designed to further our anti-racism and anti-oppression efforts. The first motion recommends that all committees elected by the General Assembly engage in anti-racism training and/or consultation. The second motion asks the Journey Towards Wholeness Transformation Committee to survey a sampling of the Quebec GA participants to gather information about the GA experience of people of color and other oppressed groups as compared to that of other groups, and report to the January meeting of the Board.
