Chalice Lighter Grant Made

On April 11 at the T.J. District Annual Meeting, it was my pleasure to present the representatives of the Eno River UU Fellowship with a check for $18,393. This grant will help with the establishment of their campus ministry.

The Extension Committee and I thank the Chalice Lighters for responding to this call and we wish ERUUF every success in this new venture.

New Chalice Lighter Call:
The recipient for the spring call for 2003 is the UU Fellowship of New Bern, NC. They are applying for their first half-time minister.

The UU Fellowship of New Bern is a small community comprised of retirees with about 20-30 members. The congregation belongs to the Tidewater Cluster and their activities have included an extensive outreach program, which has brought in visitors and new members. The members of the congregation volunteer at the local public radio station, thereby keeping their name in front of a target audience.

These folks seem to be doing all the right things, and as Chalice Lighters, we encourage their growth, applaud their spirit and commend their commitment to Unitarian Universalism. They also report a 33% Chalice Lighter Membership.

Please honor your pledge to the Chalice Lighter Program and send your check, made payable to the Thomas Jefferson District Chalice Lighter Fund to the District Office.

To date, we have received $8500 toward this call.

Western Carolinas Cluster Forms

Congregations in Western North and South Carolina have formed a new TJD cluster called The Cluster of Western Carolina Congregations (CWCC), whose mission statement is “We, the Cluster of Western Carolina Congregations come together to strengthen and affirm each congregation to better live our UU mission.”

It was a great joy to work on this conference because of the incredible energy that was generated throughout the process. When the UU Church of Asheville began with the Denominational Affairs Committee to find a way to connect with the congregations around us, this was what we wanted to make happen. On March 29, when we welcomed over 100 people representing 11 congregations, it was a dream that had come true beyond what we had hoped for. The energy built throughout the day as we learned together and made new friends and felt the UU spirit growing. We all left that day feeling less alone as a congregations and knowing we have brothers and sisters close by with similar joys and challenges.

We know we will be meeting again in coming years and working to find ways to connect us in between the annual gatherings. A steering committee is being formed now.
