On the Journey Toward Wholeness:
TJ District Anti-Racism Transformation Team (DARTT)
Anti-Racism work in the UUA and the TJD is going through a transition. As many of you know the Faith in Action Department of the UUA was dissolved as of last July, and now each department has an anti-racism component. Some of us feel that it places far more responsibility on districts and congregations to do the work. However, we have not been abandoned by Boston. On March 14-16, Bill Gardiner's office invited Jubilee Trainers to a meeting in Boston, and boy, did we meet, from early morning until late at night. Bob Gross and Myrtle Hepler from TJD attended and helped explore the best ways in to continue the important work of anti-racism transformation.
The TJD had been a perfect example of the one way the transition can work. On the previous weekend, March 7-9, the UU Church of Greensboro hosted a Jubilee World Weekend sponsored by the UUA. Elandria Williams, a member of DARTT, apprenticed with UUA Trainers Betty Holcomb and Myrtle Hepler.
Shelley Mason and her committee in Greensboro, along with Reverend Alex Richardson, laid plans for a successful weekend. As is supposed to happen, many plans for long term projects were made and are being implemented
DARTT will sponsor its first Jubilee World September 26-28 at Clemson, SC. If your congregation is doing Anti-Racism work, please let the District know via the TJ Connection. The First Unitarian Church of Richmond and the UU Church of Charlotte had successful and significant programs this spring to promote the understanding of and the work of anti-racism. Knowledge of such events may inspire other congregations to plan similar programs. If you want DARTT to help with trainings, please contact Bob Gross at

Rania Masri, Director of Southern Peace Research and Education Center, is
scheduled to be keynote speaker at the 2004 Anti-Racism Conference to be held at ERUUF in Durham, NC February 20-22. She is a dynamic speaker and social activist. It is not too early to put the weekend on your calendar.
UUF Raleigh, Community Church of Chapel Hill, and All Souls Church, Durham will be planning the event, along with DARTT members, Leslie
Takahashi-Morris, Charlie West, and Myrtle Hepler. We hope to involve many of the writers, artists, and musicians who reside and work in the Triangle area.
