 Rev. Bill Sinkford to Keynote
TJD Anti-Racism Conference, Feb. 21-23

You probably need to get out your 2003 calendar this minute. You'll want to block out the whole weekend of February 21 through 23 from Friday evening through the service Sunday morning. The reason? First Unitarian Church of Richmond, UU in Richmond, VA will host the TJ District's Annual Anti-Racism Conference that weekend, and it is already shaping up to be an event not to be missed.

You will want to get the conference on your schedule early, so you won't have to compete with several hundred other UUs from around the District for a seat in the Great Hall. The District's Annual Anti-Racism Conference usually draws about 200 people, but this year the competition could be especially stiff, since so many people will be eager to hear Rev. Bill Sinkford deliver the keynote address Saturday morning. Rev. Sinkford is the President of our denominations, the Unitarian Universalist Association, is an inspiring speaker, and is the first African American to head a majority white denomination in the US.

Other features of the conference include a mini-film and discussion series, three tracks of workshops, a coffee house, a bookstore, good food, and much more. As you may know, our church has a reputation for making events like this class acts, so we have high standards to uphold.

With this conference in mind, our congregations voted at the annual meeting in June to adopt racial harmony as the church's social justice theme for 2002-03. The hope was that by concentrating primarily on one issue, we could enrich the experience for the congregation as a whole, increase the ways in which members and friends could get involved, and strengthen our social justice efforts.
