Beacon Press Q. Which publisher published James Baldwin's Notes of a Native Son, Cornel West's Race Matters, the five volume set of The Pentagon Papers, and Marian Wright Edelman's best-selling book, The Measure of Our Success: A Letter to My Children and Yours? A. Our own Beacon Press, a department of the UUA. Beacon Press, founded in 1854 and voted Trade Publisher of the Year in 1993, describes itself as "an independent publisher of serious non-fiction and fiction." Its mission is to affirm and promote our seven principles. This mission is not a big money maker. In fact, the Beacon Press is struggling for its literary life and needs our support. I encourage you to visit www.beacon.org and browse the catalogues for new listings and long time favorites. You might prefer to pick up a UUA Bookstore Catalogue from the website or order it from UUA. It also includes books from other publishers. These are good places to look for holiday gifts. I urge you to support this small but important publishing house. Without it, many books supporting our seven principles would not get published. Sylvia Woodworth, President UU Fellowship of Waynesboro Reflections from Mike Skinner, President of UU Fellowship of the New River Valley on Fall Leadership Conference As President of our Fellowship, it's always rewarding to make contact with other UUs in the region who share our beliefs and who also wrestle with the same management problems we face. A few weekends ago, Bruce Ferguson, Morton Nadler, Andrea Kelso and I attended the UUA Thomas Jefferson District Leadership Conference dealing with the financial health of congregations. It's a simple truth that our spiritual community cannot survive and continue to strengthen our membership and programs without attention to the mundane matters of money. The conference was hosted by the Tennessee Valley UU Church, whose wonderful building was the envy of all. Their RE facilities rival some elementary schools, and their sanctuary includes a turn of the (20th) century pipe organ. If you don't think you like pipe organ music, you've never heard one play show tunes and swing music. We learned that to prosper, we need to bring money talk "out of the closet." We need to be open and direct in our fund raising programs, acknowledging our needs and that we are the source of the financial health of the congregation. Request for Proposals for 2003 and 2004 GA Programming Are Available Do you or your group have a suggestion or GA programming? TJD would like to give individuals and groups an opportunity to present their programs to an associational-wide audience by sharing some of our GA program slots. We are looking forward to seeing your ideas for workshops, worship services, panel discussions and performance pieces. To obtain a Request for Proposal, contact the TJD Office, 9704 Mallard Creek Rd.
